Private lease

With a private lease you drive a car for a fixed monthly amount. The car remains the property of the leasing company.

What is included in the monthly amount?

Most private lease contracts include depreciation, insurance, maintenance, tyres, road tax and roadside assistance. You pay for fuel or charging yourself. Check per offer exactly what is included and how high the insurance excess is.

Term and mileage

You usually choose a term between 12 and 72 months and a number of kilometres per year. If you drive more, you pay per extra kilometre; if you drive less, you sometimes get money back. The longer the term, the lower the monthly amount often is.

What to watch out for

  • A private lease contract is registered with the BKR (Dutch credit registration office). This can affect, for example, a mortgage application.
  • The leasing company checks whether the monthly amount fits your income and fixed costs.
  • Ending early can cost money. Read the terms for early termination.
  • When you return the car, it is checked for damage beyond normal wear and tear.

Who is private lease for?

For anyone who wants to know in advance exactly what a car costs per month and does not want to tie up money in a car of their own. It can also be a clear solution for newcomers to the Netherlands; conditions differ per leasing company.
